Psoriasis Comorbidities May Tend To Worsen Over Time
MedPage Today (3/8, Bankhead) reported that, according to research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting, “patients with psoriasis have multiple comorbid conditions that tend to worsen over time.” After analyzing “health system claims records for 5,723 patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis” and matching controls, researchers found not only that “psoriasis patients had significantly higher rates of hypertension than non-psoriasis controls (14.9% versus 11.9%, P<0.0001), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3.9% versus 3.1%, P=0.0151), depression (3.7% versus 2.8%, P=0.0077), diabetes (6.3% versus 5.0%, P=0.0471)…hyperlipidemia (15.2% versus 11.5%, P<0.0001),” and obesity (0.6% versus 0.2%), but also that “the differences between the two groups increased during four years of follow-up.”
Statins May Help Improve Symptoms Of Psoriasis
WebMD (3/8, Laino) reported, “Already linked to a reduced risk of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, statins also may help to improve symptoms of psoriasis,” according to research presented at that American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting. Investigators, “in a study of 232 people taking medication for psoriasis,” found that participants “who also took statins had fewer of the thick, red, scaly, itchy patches that are the hallmark sign of psoriasis, compared with people who didn’t take the cholesterol-lowering drugs.”
Men Exposed To High Levels Of Sunlight At Work Less Likely To Develop Kidney Cancer
HealthDay (3/8, Preidt) reported, “Men with jobs that expose them to high levels of sunlight are less likely to develop kidney cancer than those with little or no sunlight exposure at work,” according to a study appearing in the journal Cancer. Researchers found that “men with the highest level of work-related exposure to sunlight were 24 percent to 38 percent less likely to have kidney cancer than other men.” Notably, the “association between job-related sunlight exposure and kidney cancer risk was not seen in women.”
MedPage Today (3/8, Emery) reported that the authors said “one explanation for the inverse association between UV and cancer is…that, in the skin, sunlight exposure increases the production of vitamin D, which travels through the blood to other sites in the body.” They noted that “the kidney is the major organ responsible for vitamin D metabolism and activity and for calcium homeostasis.”
Combination Therapy May Help Patients With Severe Acne
MedPage Today (3/5, Bankhead) reported that, according to a study published in the February issue of Cutis, ‘patients with severe acne had significantly greater improvement when topical adapalene/benzoyl peroxide (Epiduo) was added to oral doxycycline.” After randomizing “459 patients to oral doxycycline plus topical adapalene/benzoyl peroxide or gel vehicle,” then following them up for 12 weeks, researchers found that “patients allocated to the combination had an average clearance of 64% versus 41% with doxycycline plus vehicle.”
