It’s a new year—why not make this a time to get a new you? Injectable fillers are a non-surgical
alternative to facial procedures to improve appearance. In decades past, surgical facelifts were the only way to eliminate the fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Now, with more advanced injectable fillers on the market, you don’t have to worry about your eligibility for surgery, and recovery time is minimal, leaving you with skin that looks plumper and more elastic.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are among the most popular today. The American Academy of Dermatology Association believes that HA fillers are a good choice because they are safe and compatible with the human body. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body’s cells and transfers nutrients to the skin.
The actual filler itself is soft and gel-like, and HA filler is injected into the skin to give
the appearance of hydrated, lush skin that has restored volume and fullness. Fine lines will virtually disappear. However, as HA is a naturally derived substance, it will eventually be absorbed by your body. For most individuals, there will be noticeable results from the filler for six months to around 18 months before it starts to wane. HA fillers can be used on the face and neck. Some brands include the numbing agent lidocaine, which can reduce discomfort during the procedure.
Calcium Hydroxyapatite
Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHa) is a thicker texture dermal filler than hyaluronic acid. It’s also naturally
derived and is a compound naturally found in bones. Typically, you’ll see fewer lines and wrinkles for 12-18 months. The heavier weight of this compound also means it can target deeper lines and wrinkles, such as frown lines and the nasolabial folds.
Poly-L-Lactic Acid
Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), also known a polylactic acid or simply PLLA, is a non-toxic, biodegradable synthetic material that. The substance has been used in medicine for decades, including as dissolvable sutures. PLLA helps stimulate collagen production, which is the natural way your body maintains a youthful look. This filler builds volume, meaning it can tackle some of the hollow areas in the face and lines in the neck and help take a few years off your appearance. You won’t see immediate results—PLLA works by stimulating collagen production, which takes time to develop. Patients can expect to see gradually improving results over the course of several months, and those results will last for up to two years. This filler needs to be applied over several treatments.
