Millions of men and women around the country suffer from the chronic skin condition called psoriasis. Psoriasis manifests itself in various ways, but most notably in the form of dry, itchy red patches of skin. Psoriasis can appear almost anywhere on the body, from the scalp to the hands and knees and is often linked to stress, alcoholism, changes in the weather, and even genetics.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for psoriasis. However, with the right treatment, psoriasis is highly treatable! One of the most popular treatment options available today is STELARA®.
So, what exactly is STELARA?
STELARA is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. Using a fine needle, it is injected into an area of the body that has not been impacted by this condition – usually, the thighs or the stomach. What sets this medication apart is that it treats the entire immune system, significantly slowing down the production of new skin cells, and reducing inflammation. These injections can either be performed by a doctor, or even by the patient.
Generally speaking, STELARA is quite safe for most patients. Like with any injection, however, the medication does have the potential for side-effects, most notably nausea, fatigue, and joint pain. The medication should only be used by patients who are over the age of 18. Additionally, women who are pregnant, and those patients with severe allergies are not considered good candidates for STELARA.
However, STELARA is not a “one-size-fits-all” type of procedure. The correct dosage of the medication will depend on the severity of the patient’s condition, as well as their specific health needs. Once the injection is complete, patients should receive injections every twelve weeks to ensure effective treatment. Your doctor will be the one to determine how many injections you will need!
While results vary by individual, most patients will see a significant difference in how their skin looks after about 12 weeks. Many patients who have continually used the product for a year or more have seen continuous improvement in their skin!
