What is Tumescent Liposuction? You may not realize it, but liposuction is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. Though many forms of liposuction exist, the world standard for safety and efficacy is tumescent liposuction. This technique is minimally invasive and removes stubborn, unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body.

The tumescent technique uses a solution of local anesthetic, medications and saline to fill the fatty layer of the skin. This causes the tissue to become swollen and firm, allowing the doctor to have better control of the area to contour and shape.

The procedure requires only local anesthetic, and is performed on an outpatient basis. In addition to the benefit of not having the risk of anesthesia, the doctor can ask the patient to change positions during the surgery, which can create better results. Additional patient benefits include faster recovery and improved cosmetic results as well as less bleeding and bruising.

The best candidate for tumescent liposuction is an adult in overall good health who practices daily health habits, but have localized areas of stubborn fat. The procedure can be used to treat pockets of fat in the thighs, abdomen, back, hips, neck, face, calves and chest. Liposuction is not a solution for major weight loss.

Following the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area. Compression garments may be worn to treat these symptoms and help the healing process, and most patients can return to work and other regular activities within a few days.

Results are typically not immediately visible due to bruising and swelling, but will continue to improve as healing progresses. With regular diet and exercise, the results of tumescent liposuction are long-lasting, and in many cases, permanent as long as weight is maintained.
